Example of a FEM calculation
This example is to show the
deformation due to pressure of a pipesegment welded onto a
vessel. This calculation was made to compare the results with the
results from Roark. The effort was done to show that blindly
relying on Roark`s formulas or any FEM programme can result in
unacceptlable mistakes.
The equivalent stresses calculated with the FEM programme were
more in line with the expectation than the ones calculated with
Roark's formulas. However the direction of some components of the
equivalent stress were proven to be incorrect
